During this ancient period, the southern part of Belgium was submerged under the sea. In what is now Soignies, the sea's water levels were relatively low, resulting in the proliferation of crinoids, marine organisms with distinctive feathery appendages.
Over countless millennia, layers of sediment accumulated on the seabed and compressed the limestone mud. This geological process contributed to the formation of this exceptional stone. What makes Belgian Black Blue Stone truly unique is the high concentration of visible ancient fossils, including crinoids and corals, as well as calcite veins. These remnants of prehistoric marine life give the stone a captivating and storied character.
When quarried and expertly polished, the stone showcases its captivating dark and smoky coloration, which is beautifully complemented by the presence of light gray and white fossils. The occasional appearance of calcite veins adds further intrigue and uniqueness to this remarkable material.
