Kaufunger Marmor

Kaufunger Marmor (Kapela Rozowy Marble) is no longer actively quarried on an industrial scale today. The quarries in Wojcieszów, which historically produced this rose-colored marble, have mostly ceased large-scale extraction due to depletion of economically viable deposits and shifts in local quarrying focus.
Kaufunger Marmor / Kapela Rozowy is a rose pink marble with a warm, elegant appearance. Its base color ranges from soft, dusty pink to more vibrant rose tones. Subtle variations in hue occur naturally within the stone, often forming light and darker rose veining or cloud-like patterns, giving it a unique and luxurious aesthetic.
Color, Texture & Pattern
- Color: Rose pink base with lighter and darker pink streaks.
- Pattern: Soft veining and cloud-like inclusions, providing a harmonious, pastel-like texture.
- Texture: Fine-grained, smooth, and uniform when polished.
Physical and Mechanical Properties
Typical values based on similar European marbles from Lower Silesia; slight variations occur based on quarry and batch.
- Bulk density (specific gravity): ~2.65 – 2.68 g/cm³
- Water absorption by weight: ~0.2 – 0.3%
- Porosity: ~0.5 – 1%
- Compressive strength: ~110 – 140 MPa
- Flexural strength: ~13 – 17 MPa
- Abrasion resistance (hardness): Mohs hardness 3 – 4
- Slip resistance: Polished: ~40 – 50 SRV (low slip resistance) Honed/antique finishes: higher slip resistance
- Modulus of rupture: ~12 – 18 MPa
- Frost resistance: Moderate – not recommended for severe frost conditions without treatment
Chemical and Mineral Composition
Approximate percentages by weight:
- Calcium carbonate (CaCO3): ~95 – 97%
- Magnesium carbonate (MgCO3): ~1 – 2%
- Silica (SiO2): ~0.5 – 1%
- Alumina (Al2O3): ~0.3 – 0.5%
- Iron oxide (Fe2O3): ~0.2 – 0.5%
- Trace minerals: muscovite, quartz, clay minerals
Uses
- Interior wall cladding, flooring, staircases
- Bathroom and kitchen applications (vanities, splashbacks)
- Decorative features, columns, and moldings
- Fireplace surrounds, monuments, and sculptures
- Not recommended for heavy traffic outdoor paving due to porosity and moderate frost resistance
Maintenance
- Regular cleaning with pH-neutral cleaners
- Periodic sealing to reduce water and stain absorption
- Avoid strong acids or abrasive cleaners to preserve the polish and prevent etching
